Thunderbolt has very little advantage for consumers, but it enables a lot of flashy demos in Apple keynotes. Case in point, Thunderbolt cables are still expensive due to the use of very new and expensive transceivers. Apple does not develop the connection standards that are good for consumers it develops the standards that are good for Apple. Don’t expect you’ll ever pay anywhere near $3.50 for a Lightning cable either. Analysts estimate Lightning cables run Apple $3.50 each, which is 775% more than the 30-pin. Not only are the cables harder to produce, they cost Apple far more than the old 30-pin connectors. The company is seeing a shortage of Lightning cables, and the most likely explanation is that yields are very low.
If you think you can just get all the cables you want from Apple, that might not be as easy as it seems. In other words, the market for cheap third-party Lightning cables might be dead before it even gets started. This chip is directly in the path of the V+ wire, which tells us that a cable without this feature likely won’t work. But the complexity of Lightning may explain the presence of the recently discovered authentication chip inside the cable. The upshot of all this is that Lightning connectors can be plugged in however you like, and it does have room to grow in the future. These pins are asymmetrical, meaning that if you flip the plug around the pins fall in completely different places.
